PCAT

The Pharmacy College Admission Test, an online test conducted by Harcourt Assessment Inc throughout the year is the officially preferred examination for entry in schools comprising the American Association of Colleges for Pharmacy, a group of all colleges offering courses in pharmacy in the United States.

In order to be considered eligible to take the test, the applicant must at least be a graduate. High grades are desirable, since admission to pharmacy colleges will depend on both the PCAT score and the college level performance. Each college of pharmacy determines its individual criteria for admission. Each school has its own specific set of educational criteria, and preferred courses in the graduation level vary from college to college. However, a sound background in the sciences is desirable, although students from any stream are eligible to sit for the examination. Candidates should also have good communication skills, both verbal and written.

A candidate can sit the PCAT for a maximum of five times. However, exceptions are made in special cases; for a sixth try, the candidate has to file a special application stating a valid reason for the request.

A standardized test, the examination runs for approximately six hours. The entire paper consists of seven sections, namely, Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability, Biology, Chemistry, Reading Comprehension and two Writing sections. The examination if mainly designed to test how well the candidate can analyse and comprehend, and also his/her reasoning abilities.
